CMAC Dominance!!!
It was a beautiful day for baseball at Central Michigan University on Saturday and a beautiful outcome as well as the Fighting Bees of Bath defeated Fowler in the semi-finals and then battled Portland St. Pats for a nine inning 3-2 win and a back-to-back CMAC Tournament Championship!!!
Brodie Megill (7-0) pitched a gem in semi-final game against Fowler, giving up only one hit, walking two and striking out 14, while going the distance for the seven inning shutout win 2-0.
Scoring for the Bees kicked off in the second inning as Brandon Wahrer hit a lead-off single and stole second. Brodie Megill then stepped to the plate with one out and got a base hit RBI between third and short to score Wahrer. The second and final run of the game was scored in the 5th when Ryan Orr singled, stole second and made it to third on Brenden Plemmons' sacrifice bunt. Nick Stiles then took advantage of the runner in scoring position and scored Orr on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Nick Stiles and Brandon Wahrer led the Bees offensively going 1-2 at the plate while Brenden Plemmons, Brodie Megill and Mike Mills were all 1-3.
The championship game against Portand St. Pats featured Nick Stiles (8-1) on the mound who went the distance in the nine inning 3-2 win, giving up three hits, walking three and striking out 19.
Scoring started in the bottom of the third for the Bees when Grant Svendsen reached on an error and stole second. Mike Mills and Ryan Orr both bunted down third baseline and reached on consecutive errors to load the bases. Brenden Plemmons then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Grant Svendsen to take the 1-0 lead.
Nick Stiles was perfect through 4 innings, but the Shamrocks answered in the top of the fifth with two outs, reaching first on an error, then stealing second base and scoring on an RBI single up the middle making the score 1-1 after five.
The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until the 8th when the Shamrocks started the top of the inning with two straight walks and two straight strikeouts. But with two outs and two strikes, managed to get a base hit just out of the reach of diving Ryan Orr to score the go ahead run before the half inning ended.
The Bees answered back in the bottom of the 8th to keep the game going when Nick Stiles hit a lead off single, stole second and then advanced to third on Austin Townsend's sacrifice bunt. Brandon Wahrer then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Stiles and tie the game 2-2.
In the top of the ninth, Nick Stiles got two quick strikeouts, but the Shamrocks mustered one more base hit before flying out to second basemen Ryan Orr and leaving the door open for a Bees win in the bottom of the ninth.
And the Fighting Bees did just that as Grant Svendsen lead off with a clutch basehit, stole second and then moved to third on Mike Mills infield single. With runners at first and third with no outs, Ryan Orr wasted no time and got a bunt down on the first pitch to score Svendsen on the squeeze.
The Bees were lead offensively by Nick Stiles and Mike Mills who both were 2-4 at the plate, while Scotty Kirkpatrick was 1-3 and Ryan Orr and Grant Svendsen were both 1-4.
The Bees next action is 7:30pm on Wednesday, May 25th, at Municipal Field VS the Holt Rams in the Diamond Classic Tournament. Come on out and cheer on your league champion Bees!!!

Bath Varsity Baseball is starting to receive some attention in the media. Nick Stiles was selected as Athlete of the Week by WLNS Channel 6. You can view that here: http://tinyurl.com/3s5n6h8.
WILX Channel 10 was also at a recent practice and aired a feature on the news Tuesday night (also on FOX 47). I can't seem to find that video online. I'll post it if I do.
The Lansing State Journal selected Brodie Megill as their athlete of the week. Check it out here: http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20110505/SPORTS02/105050334/High-school-athletes-week.
Bath was also mentioned in the Lansing State Journal Prep Rally. Check that out here: http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20110504/SPORTS02/305040008/Prep-Rally-Week-13. Translate Drew Plemmons to Brenden Plemmons. ;-)
And lastly, Bath Baseball made the Lansing State Journal Mid-Michigan Power Poll: http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20110505/SPORTS/105050328/High-school-power-poll.
There is a lot of work left to do and the team is keeping a workman's like attitude, but it is nice to get some recognition for all their hard work. Congratulations guys!
